Google, Microsoft, and Nvidia Back 800V DC Standard for AI Data Centers
Importance · 4/5Sources · 1
What happened
Google, Microsoft, and Nvidia are collaborating through the Open Compute Project (OCP) to establish 800-volt direct current (800VDC) as an open standard for high-density AI data centers. They began presenting this work in 2025 and are now defining specifications for power conversion, quality, and safety.
Why it matters
This standard aims to reduce infrastructure complexity and operational expenses. It offers significant savings, including a 50% to 80% reduction in copper usage and $4 million to $8 million in CapEx savings per 10 MW build. It creates a common electrical foundation for AI factories, though AWS has not yet committed to the standard.
