Tokyo Plans Countermeasures Against Putin's Visit to Northern Territories
Importance · 5/5Sources · 1
What happened
The Japanese government plans to consider countermeasures against Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to one of the four islands claimed by Japan. Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae called the visit unacceptable and incompatible with Japan's position. Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu summoned Russian Ambassador Nikolay Nozdrev to lodge a strong protest.
Why it matters
The visit is expected to further strain already frosty Japan-Russia relations. Analysts note that unilateral actions by Putin negatively impact bilateral ties and make restoring relations over the medium to long term more difficult.
