South Korea proposes talks to officially end Korean War
What happened
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung proposed talks with North Korea to officially end the 1950-53 Korean War and discuss halting Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions. He suggested a 'multi-layered security system' for the DMZ. The conflict remains technically active due to the 1953 armistice. Lee made the proposal on Liberation Day (Aug 15, 2026). North Korea has not yet responded.
Why it matters
Ending the armistice could replace the 'unstable system' with a peace regime, potentially stabilizing Northeast Asia. However, North Korea has deepened ties with Russia and declared South Korea a 'primary foe,' making engagement difficult. The US stations 28,500 troops in South Korea, and North Korea has fired 11 ballistic missiles this year.
