Risk Factors for Retinopathy of Prematurity in the Philippines Identified

What happened

A study of 1900 premature infants across 12 Philippine regions found that 25% developed retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), with 37% progressing to severe cases. Lower gestational age, birthweight, male gender, and packed red blood cell transfusion were identified as risk factors.

Why it matters

This is the first multiregional multicenter data on ROP in the Philippines, demonstrating substantial incidence beyond the National Capital Region (NCR).
