Qatar denies holding Iranian pilots as Iran-US tensions escalate
What happened
Qatar denied Iran’s accusation that it is holding Iranian pilots. IRNA cited a senior military official saying three Iranian pilots had been captured alive by Qatari forces after ejecting during a combat mission targeting a military base in Qatar; a Qatari foreign ministry spokesperson said search teams found the remains of one pilot and had contacted Iran to coordinate a handover. Iran also executed Shahram Sadeghi for driving into police officers during January protests in Karaj, accused two French diplomats of interference, and said Kuwait was withholding information about the fate of four Iranians held there. US Central Command chief Admiral Brad Cooper visited the USS Lincoln, and Yemen’s Mocha port halted operations after Houthi attacks.
Why it matters
The pilot dispute adds a diplomatic rift to the wider Iran-US war, while Iran’s refusal to resume talks, with the Strait of Hormuz set to remain closed, underlines the confrontation. The USS Lincoln’s record-setting uninterrupted deployment of more than 240 days and the halt at Mocha port near the Bab el-Mandab strait show the strain on US forces and key shipping routes.
